Celestial to release USS Atule Personalization Package at First Ever Joint Convention of Submarine Veterans in Reno Nevada


August, 2003 -- Celestial Burial Case, the leading provider of officially licensed funeral merchandise, has created the best available personalization method in the funeral industry and is launching its new line in conjunction with The United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) at their first ever joint convention in Reno Nevada the week of September 1, 2003. Now the brave men and women who served aboard the USS Atule can have the official logo of not only the USSVI but also their specific submarine emblem on their funeral merchandise.

The USS Atule was launched March 6, 1944 and commissioned June 21, 1944 in Portsmouth Maine. She fought many battles in the Pacific in October and November of 1944 and was credited with almost 27,000 tons of enemy shipping destroyed.

Early in 1945 the USS Atule went through a month of upkeep and training at Majuro Atoll and was sent towards the Yellow Sea where it became part of a group of submarines known as Underwood Urchins who trained and traveled together. On January 24 the USS Atule attacked and destroyed a 6,888-ton freighter in the Yellow Sea. The USS Atule earned four battle stars for its WWII service.

The war patrol ended on May 30, 1945 and the USS Atule returned to Pearl Harbor. In the years following the war the USS Atule completed many missions with distinction. In 1946 the USS Atule became the first US Navy ship to reach latitude 79 degrees 11 minutes north in the Kane Basin. From 1947 through 1970 the USS Atule was based in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, Portsmouth Maine, New London Connecticut, Key West Florida among others during it various assignments. In July, 1974 the USS Atule was sold to Peru and renamed the Pacocha.
